When we fall, get bruised, or get injured, it’s only natural to immediately ask for help.
However, if someone is struggling with internal pain, has loneliness, depression, anxiety, feels isolated, or hopeless, we hesitate to ask for help. Why?
For a lot of people going through internal pain or struggling with their mental health, they feel that others are judging them due to their mental illness.
Because of this, many people hesitate to ask for help in the same way they would for a physical injury.
Unfortunately, this is the sad truth for many who suffer from a mental illness. Negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who have mental health conditions are common.
Stigma can lead to discrimination. Discrimination may be obvious and direct, such as someone making a negative remark about your mental illness or your treatment.
Although the general perception of mental illness has improved in recent years, according to studies, the stigma against those with mental illness and the need to seek help through counseling is still powerful.
What steps can we take to end the stigma around mental health and mental health counseling?
Here are a few of them. ☀️
The judgments of other people almost always stem from a lack of understanding rather than information based on facts.
So, in order to fight this stigma, we can take action even in our own little ways. Whether it is by educating yourself, even more, educating others, spreading the word, or showing compassion, we all have the power to contribute in our own simple ways.
No matter how you contribute to the mental health movement, you can make a difference simply by knowing that mental illness is not anyone’s fault, no matter what societal stigma says.
